bio

I saw the saxophone guy in the muppet show when I was seven. So I wanted to play saxophone. I have been playing it ever since. I can't put my finger on it, but it has to have something, that makes me go on playing and exploring it in all it's possibilities.

What happened then? Shortly (you may find my CV in the download section): I studied saxophone. First in Mainz (Steffen Weber, Thomas Bachmann), then in Berlin (Prof. Peter Weniger) and in New York City (Tony Moreno, Chris Potter). In my music I am dealing with microtonal possibilities in Jazz. Please watch my EPK ("What I do") or my demonstration of 128 notes per octave on the alto saxophone for further information. My main project is my band "Besaxung". But I am composing and playing my own music with different musicians as well. My new CD which will be released in 2017 on RareNoise records features Jack DeJohnette, David Fiuczynski, Matthew Garrison and Giorgi Mikadze. As a Sideman and leader I am playing with different bands in Germany and abroad.

quotes

About Philipp Gerschlauer

"Philipp Gerschlauer has done incredible research and organized the many possibilities for pitch and color alternate fingerings for the saxophone. The possibilities for expanding the saxophone's coloristic and expressive nuances are massive." (Dave Liebman

About "Mikrojazz: Neue Expressionistische Musik" (RareNoise Records)

"… a haunting and benchmark setting masterpiece which will in 40, 60, 100 years still be seen as revolutionary and astonishing - just as fresh as listening to Charlie Parker's recordings in 1945."

Matthias Entreß (independent journalist, DeutschlandRadio Kultur, DLF, WDR, HR)

"Mikrojazz: Neue Expressionistische Musik" took microtonal music to new places, and there’s never a dull moment.

Somethingelse Reviews

"Gerschlauer succeeds to turn over an absolute new leaf of Jazz/Rock. What more could one want? Chapeau!"

(Wolf Kampmann, author Reclam's jazz lexicon)

"The quintet doesn't try to tear down harmonic borders but it tries to conquer new harmonic virgin soil."

Süddeutsche Zeitung

"What a mind-blowing album this is! ...it’s your chance to be some of the first ones on board."

Dave Tremblay, heavyblogishheavy.com

“This is music that is redolent of often ecstatic earthy celebration; a coming together of the natural and the supernatural worlds. It is thrillingly sensuous music of bright acoustic (electric and electronic) colours and resonant fades.” Raul Da Gama Rose, Jazzdagama

“Lyrical ... uncanny ... oddly beautiful ... sounds like The Grateful

Dead on varispeed”

THE WIRE STEWART SMITH

"…provocative and inviting"
